Nio ET9 vs Tesla Model Y 2025
Are the so called luxuries of the Nio ET 9, more valuable than the self driving tech of Tesla? Not really. In a couple of years, the autonomous driving abilities of Tesla, will turn out to be a far bigger advantage compared to the Nio ET nine's party trick, it's adaptive suspension.
Nio's self driving tech still continues on the lidar based path, which is dropping further and further behind, the pure vision based path taken by Tesla. And then there's three big parameters in which the ET nine is quite disappointing. First is the performance.
In spite of being over two fifty h-p more powerful than the Tesla, it loses out in a drag race. Tesla's lighter weight, completely negates Nio's power-advantage. Not to forget the boost pack might make it even quicker, giving a zero-to-hundred time of just three point eight second.

Even the range is going to be similar during real-world usage, since Nio's numbers are based on the Chinese CLTC cycle, while Tesla's numbers are based on a more realistic, WLTP cycle. And then we come to the price.
The Nio is a over a hundred grand more expensive than the long range model y, when you convert it's China price, to aussie dollars. Agreed, that it has more luxurious interiors than the Model Y, and lots of extra electronic trinkets everywhere.
But remember, more trinkets you have, more chances of them conking off, after a few years. Also, the Tesla already ticks all the necessary boxes, when it comes to tech and equipment. Be it ventilated seats, panoramic roof, powered tailgate or the heat pump.
The only attribute, where Elon should have upgraded the Model Y, is it's fast charging ability. The Nio literally decimates the Tesla in this aspect. It charges almost three times faster than the Tesla. Plus it has the battery swapping ability, which can give you a fully charged car in four minutes.
On top of that, you can save around eighteen thousand dollars while buying the car. Plus you don't have to take on the liability of a battery failure, on your head. It is a highly complex solution, and won't be around after few years, as proven by BYD's approach.
With 2 charging ports and a megawatt charging capable battery, swapping stations become totally redundant. All said and done, Nio ET nine, has come to be a cautionary tale within the electric car industry.
With losses climbing up to 35,000 US dollars per vehicle, Nio's survival in the industry itself is becoming quite difficult. They forgot the manufacturing adage, that quantity has it's own quality.
