ID.4 vs Xpeng G6
The ID four, requires two urgent improvements, to make it competitive in the Market. First, is an 800 volt architecture. It would be quite easy for them, given they hold a 5 percent stake in Xpeng, whose G6 already runs on 800 volts. The current, 400 volt architecture is hampering the ID's practicality. It charges at a fairly low speed of 9 kilometers per minute. The Xpeng of course, charges twice as fast. Perhaps, Volkswagen can at least offer charging ports on both sides of the car, like BYD has started doing! That might put them at par with the G6, at those charging stations, which have 100 kilowatt chargers, max. Second improvement needed, is the self driving tech. Xpeng has already unveiled the next generation G6, which has dropped its lidars, for a Tesla rivalling, all vision system. It is worth mentioning here that their earlier system was already on of the best. Now, if the ID four, was priced under fifty thousand Aussie dollar, we could have given them some leeway. But given the ID four's exorbitant price, it has no excuse for cutting corners, by simply shouting out loud, about their precious, made in Germany tag. When it comes to features, it feels even more shortchanged! Especially when compared to the upcoming G6, which has elevated the quality of its interiors, to a whole another level! Check out the pinned comment for a detailed comparison, of the tech and equipment of both these vehicles. Apart from that, the ID four, is found lacking in other aspects, as well. Starting with the range. It is 26 kilometers less than the similarly priced model of the Xpeng. Even the performance is slightly weaker. It is half a second slower to a hundred k-p-h, than the G6. Not due to a lack of power, but rather due to a higher Kerb weight than the Xpeng. Even in terms of interior space and boot space, it is marginally worse than the G6. After all, it is about seven inches shorter in length, compared to the Xpeng. Same goes for rear leg room, since the ID four has a shorter wheelbase than the G6. This brings us to the bleak future that is staring Volkswagen in its face. After diesel-gate, they jumped on to the EV bandwagon with full force. But ended up making very old school vehicles. All of them look like electric derivates of a bygone Golf. They do have one rogue product, the ID Buzz, which is the only cool product in their EV range. What they could have done, is an ID Scirocco, much like Hyundai put their bet on the Ionoiq 5. An ID Beetle, with compact dimensions of the original, much like Renault has managed with the new R5. Volkswagen has so much history and heritage to lean on. No wonder they are being punished for ignoring it!
